 The book is a historical fantasy set in 19th century Egypt, where Inez Olivera, a 19-year-old Argentinian girl, travels to Cairo to investigate the mysterious death of her parents, who were archaeologists working with her uncle, Tio Ricardo. Inez has a magical ring that belonged to Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of Egypt, which allows her to see Cleopatra’s memories and secrets. However, the ring also attracts the attention of a sinister cult that wants to use it for their own purposes.

Inez meets Whitford Hayes, Tio Ricardo’s assistant, who tries to send her back to Argentina, but she refuses and insists on finding out the truth. Whit is actually a British spy who is working undercover to stop the cult from unleashing a powerful curse that could destroy Egypt and the world. He also has feelings for Inez, but he tries to hide them because of his mission and his loyalty to Tio Ricardo.

Inez and Whit team up with Ben and Anette, a father-daughter duo who run a bookstore and are also members of a secret society that protects the ancient knowledge of Egypt. They also encounter Sterling, a charming but untrustworthy adventurer who claims to be Inez’s friend, but who is actually working for the cult. Sterling steals Inez’s ring and tries to seduce her, but she eventually sees through his lies and escapes.

Inez and Whit follow the clues left by Inez’s parents and Cleopatra’s memories, and discover that the cult is led by none other than Tio Ricardo, who is actually Inez’s biological father. He reveals that he killed Inez’s adoptive parents and that he plans to use the ring and Inez’s blood to awaken the god Set, the lord of chaos and destruction. He also reveals that he is the reincarnation of Mark Antony, Cleopatra’s lover, and that Inez is the reincarnation of Cleopatra herself.

Inez and Whit manage to stop Tio Ricardo and the cult, but not without a cost. Whit sacrifices himself to save Inez and Egypt, and Inez loses her ring and her connection to Cleopatra. However, she also gains a new family and a new purpose. She decides to stay in Egypt and continue her parents’ work, and to honor Whit’s memory. She also hopes that one day, she will see him again, either in this life or the next. The book ends with Inez writing a letter to Whit, telling him that she loves him and that she will always remember him.
